Crvena Zvezda hosts Dynamo Moscow on Tuesday in the Serbian capital in a matchupo between two teams that successfully advanced beyond the regular season in last year’s Eurocup. Dynamo qualified for the regular season after dispensing with Amsterdam with relative ease in the Qualifying Round. A returning member of the Final Eight from last year’s Eurocup, Dynamo’s backbone is formed by point guard Sergey Bykov, forward Sergey Monya and center Aleksey Savrasenko. Besides it’s legions of loyal fans cheering the home side on, Crvena Zvezda has a young and deep roster that does not allow the opponent to lock down on one or two players in order to shut down the entire team. Red Star has multiple weapons to put into play, beginning with its big men Elmedin Kikanovic, the well-traveled Oliver Stevic and Vladimir Stimac. Facing them is a true warrior in European basketball. In his first year with Dynamo, Savrasenko brings with him 10 straight years of Euroleague experience, while Alexey Zhukanenko provides a powerful one-two punch with Savrasenko down low. Besides the steady scoring of Monya, at forward Dynamo also can count on the experience of Dmitry Domani. Crvena Zvezda has a host of forwards to send into the fray, starting with Lazar Radosavljevic, Tadija Dragicevic and 2009 Eurobasket silver medallist Nemenja Bjelica, who, at just 21-years old, could be poised to have a breakout year in Europe. Maurice Bailey rounds out a Crvena Zvezda backcourt formed by Vuk Radivojevic, Nemenja Nedovic and Filip Videnov, which will take on Dynamo’s undisputed floor general, Bykov, and his sidekick, Dimitriy Khvostov. Crvena Zvezda with its fanatical home crowd is the favorite in Belgrade, however Dynamo, led by head coach Sergey Bazarevich, has the experience needed to play well on the roach and try for a big win on opening night.

Eurocup qualifying round, Game 2 report: Dynamo Moscow - Amsterdam

Dynamo Moscow routed Amsterdam 78-48 on Tuesday in the Russian capital to punch its ticket to the Eurocup Regular season. Amsterdam had a 1-point lead in the Eurocup Qualifying Round series after taking the opening leg 64-63 last week, but was no match for the former ULEB Cup winner on its own court. Sergey Bykov and Sergey Monya combined for 11 points in a 19-3 second-quarter run that helped Dynamo pull away for good en route to a 41-23 halftime lead. Dynamo stretched the lead to 31 in the second half as it coasted to victory in the game and series. Monya produced a double-double of 15 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 4 blocks, leading Dynamo, which outrebounded Amsterdam 35-25. Bykov, Dmitry Domani and Alexey Savrasenko all also scored 15 for the winners. Alton Mason paced Amsterdam with 11 points, Robert Krabbendam netted 10 and Sergio de Randamie pulled down 10 rebounds in defeat.
Bykov put Dynamo on the scoreboard first before Jessey Voorn replied for Amsterdam with a triple. The best efforts of Domani and Savrasenko were not enough to pull the hosts away as Krabbendam stood tall for the visitors. Midway through the opening quarter, back-to-back Bykov baskets and a Domani triple staked Dynamo out to a 17-9 lead, but Mason’s three-pointer brought Amsterdam back to 20-17 after 10 minutes. Mason narrowed the deficit to 1 at the start of the second quarter, but that was as close as it would get. A Monya slam ignited a 13-0 charge in which he and Bykov scored 11 as Dynamo seized control of the game for good. Ramon Siljade hit a three to end a three-and-a-half minute Amsterdam drought, but that basket would prove to be a mere oasis as Amsterdam went another three-plus minutes without scoring while Iliya Syrovatko, Yury Vasiliev and Domani increased the lead further and after a Peter Mulligan free throw for the visitors, Savrasenko made it 41-23 at halftime.
Any slim hope Amsterdam sill had at the break was dashed when Domani and Bykov opened the second half with back-to-back triples and Monya later added a basket for a 49-23 Dynamo advantage. Krabbendam finally scored Amsterdam’s first points of the quarter after more than three minutes, but Dynamo’s sizable advantage had practically decided the outcome already. Dimeo Van Der Horst’s three-pointer made it 57-36 at the end of the third quarter, but Dynamo never let up until its lead peaked at 71-40 on a Savrasenko hook with four minutes remaining as the local fans celebrated their team’s return to the Eurocup.

Game 1 report: EclipseJet Amsterdam - BC Dynamo Moscow

Dutch champions EclipseJet Amsterdam defended their home court against Enterprise BC Dynamo Moscow on Tuesday pulling out a 64-63 victory to strike first in their two-game Eurocup Qualifying Round series. Amsterdam will now nurse its one-point advantage heading into next week’s decisive encounter in Moscow. After a tightly contested first 20 minutes, the second half featured major runs by both squads. After Dynamo had fought back from 11 points down to go up by 4 with under 2 minutes to play, Amsterdam looked to Jessey Voorn to score the game’s final 5 points and earn the win for his team in heroic fashion. Voorn finished with 17 points, and his teammate Christopher Rodgers matched his offensive production while dishing out 6 assists and grabbing 5 steals. Sergey Monya led Dynamo with 13 points to go with 8 rebounds. Sergey Bykov and Alexsey Savrasenko added 12 a piece in the losing effort.
After the opening tip, both teams showed their nervousness by failing to find the bottom of the net for the first 2 minutes, 30 seconds. Savrasenko got the scoring going for Dynamo with a layup and Monya followed up with a three-pointer to grab an early 0-5 lead. Robert Krabbendarn answered with a two-plus-one for the home side, but Dynamo guard Dmitriy Khvostov drilled a long-range bomb forcing Amsterdam to take a timeout. The stoppage of play paid off as Rogers scored 5 straight to tie 8-8. Dynamo grabbed another lead thanks to Bykov and Savrasenko, but Voorn tied it again 14-14 with a jumper. Bykov and Voorn traded three-pointers to end the quarter with the scored knotted at 17-17. Rogers gave Amsterdam its first lead, 19-17, on a jumpshot to open the second quarter, but Bykov responded with a hook shot moments later and a dunk by Yury Vasiliev reclaimed the lead for Dynamo at 19-21. Sergio de Randamie and Peter Mulligan notched two buckets to once again give Amsterdam a two-point lead at 25-23 and force Dynamo to call for time. Out of the timeout Bykov made a lay-up, Dmitry Domani nailed a triple and a jumper to give Dynamo a 25-30 advantage, but 4 straight free throws pulled Amsterdam to within 29-30 as the first half closed.
Domani opened the second half with three-pointer, sparking a 1-11 run by Dynamo that was good for the game's high lead, 30-41. Amsterdam broke the Russians' offensive flow yet again, however. After a timeout, the hosts punched back with an 11-0 run of their own, including 5 points from Mulligan, to tie it at 41-41. A slam by Vasiliev broke the drought for Dynamo, but Krabbendarn’s last-second hook shot sent the Dutch champs into the final period clinging to a 45-43 lead. Krabbendarn nailed a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, setting off a 10-2 surge that put Amsterdam up 55-45. But Dynamo wasn’t done and rolled off 4-18 answer capped by pair of back-to-back layups from Iliya Syrovatka that were good for 59-63 lead with 1:45 left to play. That’s when Voorn stepped up, drilled a three-pointer and then banged home a layup with :21 to go that proved to be the winning basket.

Hemofarm Stada got the Final Eight started with a bang and major upset by downing Dynamo Moscow 85-93 in the first Quarterfinals game at Palasport Olimpico in Turin, Italy, on Thursday night. Hemofarm advanced to the semifinals for the third time in competition history and knocked out Dynamo for the second time. Bojan Krstovic led a well-balanced Hemofarm attack with 16 points, while Stefan Markovic delivers 10 assists. All told Hemofarm had five scorers in double figures and three more with at least 7 points. After a close opening quarter, three-pointers by Nebojsa Joksimovic, Milivoje Bozovic and Miljan Pavkovic helped Hemofarm take a 27-36 lead. Travis Hansen and Darjus Lavrinovic brought Dynamo within 41-45 at halftime. Dynamo managed to tie the game at 51-51, but Milan Macvan led a 2-13 run as Hemofarm built a 60-70 lead after 30 minutes. A big basket by Macvan gave Hemofarm its biggest lead, 60-72. Robertas Javtokas, Bostjan Nachbar and Hansen led Dynamo's comeback in the fourth quarter and a triple by Brian Chase got his team within 79-81, but a clutch three by Pavkovic and a layup-plus-foul by Krstovic sealed the outcome down the stretch. Javtokas took over with a reverse layup, but a driving basket by Joksimovic tied it at 4-4. Dynamo lacked ball circulation early in the game. Free throws by Bozovic gave Hemofarm its first lead, 4-6. Javtokas scored around the basket but a backdoor layup by Joksimovic put Hemofarm back ahead, 6-8. Nachbar came off the bench and immediately struck from downtown as Dynamo tried to power the offensive boards. Javtokas had a big block on Joksimovic and a long jumper by Bykov gave his team an 11-8 lead. Marjanovic provided a highlight with a dunk-and-foul, but a jumper by Hansen restored a 13-11 Dynamo edge. Bojan Krstovic and Chase traded triples , however Marjanovic dunked it again to tie the score at 16-16. Macvan scored inside early in the fourth quarter as Dynamo tried to improve its defense to keep its hopes alive. Hansen buried a four-meter jumper. Hemofarm tried to run the game clock down with long possessions. Chase buried a stop-and-pop triple, but Joksimovic answered in the same way for a 65-75 Hemofarm lead. Sergey Monya sank free throws, however Macvan took over with an off-balance layup. Javtokas shined with a put-back layup, but Hemofarm quickly called timeout at 69-77. Hemofarm decided to attack the basket once Dynamo entered the foul bonus midway through the final period.

Nachbar and Hansen - in All-Eurocup teams

Euroleague Basketball is proud to announce the members of the very first All-Eurocup teams for the 2008-09 season, which finishes next week, April 2 to 5 in Torino, Italy, when the Final Eight will crown the competition champion! The All-Eurocup teams, named by in-house experts at Euroleague Basketball, are part of an expanded awards structure this season that is meant to enhance the recognition of the finest Eurocup players for their efforts on the basketball court throughout the season. The first and second teams are divided by position, each with one point guard, two shooting guards/small forwards and two power forwards/centers. Not surprisingly, the All-Eurocup first and second teams are dominated by players who will be at the Final Eight. Nine of the 10 honored players will be in Torino trying to lead their teams to the Eurocup title. Perhaps more of a surprise is the choice at first-team point guard, Chuck Eidson of Lietuvos Rytas. That's because Eidson, a natural forward, has been filling the point guard role for Lietuvos Rytas since mid-season, and doing it so well that he led the competition in assists. He is joined on the All-Eurocup first team by shooting guards/small forwards Kelly McCarty of BC Khimki Moscow Region and Bostjan Nachbar of Dynamo Moscow, and by power forward/centers Marko Banic of iurbentia Bilbao Basket and Todor Gecevski of KK Zadar. The All-Eurocup second team features Khalid El-Amin of BC Azovmash Mariupol at point guard, Travis Hansen of Dynamo Moscow and Gary Neal of Benetton Basket Tamoil as shooting guards/small forwards, and Sandro Nicevic of Benetton and Matt Nielsen of Pamesa Valencia at the power forward/center positions. All but El-Amin qualified with their teams for the Final Eight.

Nachbar made his Eurocup debut season a successful one. He led the Eurocup in fouls drawn (6.17 per game) and free throws made (4.67 per game) and was second in free throw shooting percentage (90.3%). Nachbar led Dynamo in index ranking and was eighth overall (17.6 per game) and fifth overall in scoring (16.2 ppg.).

Hansen led Dynamo in scoring this season and was fourth in the Eurocup overall (16.2 ppg.). He also ranked ninth in the Eurocup index ranking (17.5 per game). Hansen led Dynamo in steals and was ninth overall (1.55 spg.) and was the regular season Week 2 MVP.
